The Airlines Whine

The airlines are whining about the law which took effect today that if they strand you on a plane, sitting on the tarmac for over 3 hours, it's going to cost them $27,500/passenger. If they're sitting at the gate with the doors open the rules don't apply.

AT&T Trying to Keep Age-Discrimination Lawsuit From Going to Trial

Despite internal documentation showing it knowingly discriminated against workers nearing retirement when it changed its pension system in the late 90's, AT&T is fighting allowing the lawsuit by tens of thousands of workers to be heard in a court of law.   The company froze the benefits of older employees for years, no doubt because they felt they'd have a harder time leaving for other jobs and were a "captive workforce" so to speak, while increasing the benefits of younger workers.      I remember a former AT&T manager telling me how he'd been discouraged from leaving for better job offers by higher-level managers who told him he'd be leaving a pension that was accruing benefits at a greater rate the longer he worked there.  Then, when the company announced it was changing the rules mid-stream for him and others, it hid the impact on more experienced older workers like him and simply called the new program a benefit "enhancement."    It took a while for employees to figure out that they were being discriminated against based on their age and length of service, and pensions they were told would grow were frozen by AT&T for years.   So this manager, and probably others, had hung on for something the company snatched away just as they were getting ready to retire and actually use the benefits they were promised.

Rangel: Violates House Rules, claims ignorance as defense

This is classic.  Rangel basically says I didnt know I was violating the rules, so i'm not gonna abide by em.  Next time I get pulled over for speeding, i'll just say I didnt see the signs and tell the office to go on his way.   More examples of the how this country used to operate under the rule of law.  Now it's the rule of men.   http://townhall.com/news/politics-elections/2010/02/26/ethics_panel_rangel_was_sent_memos_on_trips
