After being pressed by European officials about the kind of data the company compiled in creating the archive — and what it did with that information — Google acknowledged on Friday that it had collected snippets of private data around the world

U.S. Taxpayers Bailing Out Greece

The IMF Bailout Package for Greece We're bailing out Greece But US taxpayers shouldn't be US taxpayers will be helping to foot the bill for the Greek bailout, via the Interna tional Monetary Fund. And if the Obama administration doesn't draw a clear line, Uncle Sam may soon be on the line for even more and larger European "rescues." The Greek government, with its high taxes and profligate spending to support large bureaucracies and social programs, is bankrupt.

Lifestyle Changes reduce Breast Cancer

I'm not sure that the Coffee Shop is the place to post this thread, but I read this article this morning and because of my involvement in medical facilities, medical products, and as a woman at risk my interest is piqued. I wanted to put my thoughts and questions out there for discussion.    This is a link to an article on Comcast today summarizing discussions by scientists , researchers, and medical professionals at a conference on Breast Cancer this week.  http://www.comcast.net/articles/news-health/20100325/EU.MED.Avoiding.Breast.Cancer   Has our obsession with being skinny come to the point that some medical professionals might hedge their medical advice because they don't want to offend someone who is obese or to make them feel that by allowing their weight to increase, that it is their fault they have Breast Cancer?  I concede the fact that some people might interpret this information in this way given our unhealthy obsession with everything skinny and our pervasive penchant for feeling guilty about everything.  Medical professionals, have a duty, by their sworn oath, to do their best to save lives, prevent disease, and give proper medical instructions and advice to patients so patients are informed regarding their own health and how to improve their longevity.  Should the fear of self-blame or guilt by the patient keep a doctor from telling a patient that in addition to gender, age and genetics/family history, their obesity and inactivity also elevate their risk of developing Breast Cancer?  This is biology and physiology that affects self-preservation, not a beauty contest.    If, as the scientist said "people might wrongly think their chances of getting cancer depend more on their genes than their lifestyle", I would think it is even more critical to clear up any misconceptions by communicating ALL of the contributing factors to patients who need to know, along with the additional information that there are no guarantees that losing weight and exercising more  means that you won't develop cancer anyway since there are other contributing factors (already mentioned) that you can't control.  If the 2006 British study has shown that "Obese women are up to 60 percent more likely to develop any cancer than normal-weight women", then is this not information critical for a woman who wants to practice behavior that aids them in prevention?  Just because we don't have all of the answers yet, doesn't mean people should be denied the information and statistics that we do have.  One of the spokeswomen for a European group agreed with this when she said "If we know there are healthier choices, we can't not recommend them just because people might misinterpret the advice and feel guilty ....This message needs to get out, particularly to younger women."  I personally feel from observation, that our younger generations are not taught enough about how our lifestyles - (i.e. what we eat, what we weigh, how we exercise and stay fit, how we pollute our environment, etc.) - affect our long-term quality of life and health.  They think they will live forever no matter how they abuse themselves.      I hope there will be continued research projects into these lifestyle factors to determine WHY obesity and/or inactivity are such high risk factors.  For instance, there are many pollutants, impurities, food additives, preservatives, chemicals, and other substances that when metabolized are stored by our bodies in our fat stores, just like there are some nutrients that are only fat soluble.  Could these factors have anything to do with why obesity elevates our risk, or that the slower metabolism we have from inactivity doesn't eliminate these biological contaminants fast enough before they become toxic?  Maybe it isn't the fat, but what is being harbored in the fat that elevates the risk.  Message Edited by pita on 04-20-2010 01:05 PM
