New job with benefits – insurance company wants to draw blood?

My fiance told me that in order to get her new insurance through her work, the insurance company wanted to test her blood! I’ve never had that happen to me at ANY job. Something seems fishy to me (gut feeling) and I was just curious if any of you have ever heard of such a thing.

Reason I’m suspicious is because recently I’ve had concerns that she may have an STD and she’s been itching down there and says that’s it’s probably just bacterial. So soon after that she comes home with a shot in her arm and says that her new job’s insurance requires her to get some blood drawn… really?

Just seems strange and I’m curious if there is such a thing?

Thanks in advance! I’d love to stop being so paranoid!

Yes, they can do that. However, if you think your gf has an STD then YOU need to go see a Dr.

Many companies are requiring “biometric screenings” as they are called to get insurance (or some companies give a discount for doing it). How this works is a 3rd party (not the insurance company and not the employer) comes in and does the blood screening. Then when the results are known, the 3rd party company has a conversation with the employee to help them be more “healthy”…. (you need to eat less fatty foods, you need to walk more, blah blah blah).

The concept is that the company hopes their employees become healthier and the cost of insurance is reduced…
= personally, I think it’s a bunch of hog wash.

Add’l Info: Just a question… you meant for health insurance, right? For health insurance it’s a somewhat new thing. Many companies always had it a requirement for life insurance.

Oh, it’s normal, for higher levels of coverage.

I guess that means either you don’t work, or haven’t bothered to get life insurance to pay her, if you kick off.
