About a month ago, I came home from work and all of my kitchen cabinets were opened. The cat apparently had a great deal of fun exploring the contents of each and every one of my cabinets (top and bottom cabinets). I was worried about the cabinets with house cleaners in them, so I placed child safety latches on all of the cabinets. That trick lasted for a while, but now the cat has figured out how to lift the heater vent covers out of the floor. I have never pulled the cover out of the floor, so I am not sure how he figured out this new “trick.” The entire house is equipped with the vents that run through the floor (instead of the wall) and the cover just lays in the gap with a small lip around the perimeter to keep it from falling through. There aren’t any holes along the edge to screw the vent to the ground. I do not think that he can fit inside of the vent, but I know he can throw his toys down the vent! Is there a way to “cat proof” the vents so that my mischievous one cannot pull the cover out of the ground? Thanks!

  1. i have 2 ways. they are maybe not the best but this is all i have.

    1. train it everyday so the cat can get used to it

    2. put a block way so the cat wont pass it

  2. Get some of the screening for covering gutters that is sold at hardware stores and building supply places. Attach it over your vents. You can nail or screw the edges of it to the floor if necessary. This will still allow air to circulate, but the holes in the screen are too small for Kitty to throw things down the vents.

  3. Rub the vent with lemon juice or olbas oil, cats dont like the smell of it and shouldnt go near it.

  4. are you sure it’s the cat doing it? Have you seen him? I would have a look at his technique and then work out a way to stop him. Can you put something heavy such as a brick on each one?

  5. Place a strip of DUCT tape completely around the “lip” of the vent cover. If nothing else, it will “slow down” the removal of the cover. Maybe, if he has enough trouble getting it open, he’ll quit trying.

It sounds like he doesn’t have enough toys to keep him busy……..or maybe he needs a “playmate”, because he’s BORED………

I had to duct tape my vents shut, too………until I got another cat for mine to play with…….

    Hope this helps…..Good luck.
