So I made a stupid mistake. After having never received a ticket in the past, I got caught auto racing on a public road, and here in Virginia, that is an automatic 6 month minimum license suspension. Aside from fines and what I’m sure will be much higher insurance premiums, that 6 month suspension of my drivers license is exactly what I got. In six months (this coming April) I can go to the DMV and they will reinstate my license.
But I need to get from point A to point B, so I’m considering driving anyway. Consider these points:
1. This was a one time isolated incident of stupidity, and I happened to get caught. Prior to this, I had a clean driving record. Ergo, not doing anything to get myself pulled over shouldn’t be a problem. Therefore, if I drive as normal over the next six months, and I stay at the speed limit, come to a complete stop at every stop area, and signal every turn, basically not do anything to get myself pulled over, then I probably won’t.
2. Likewise, I be as defensive a driver as ever. Give distance, shift lanes slowly etc. Do nothing that could cause a crash.
3. I know that if I encounter a police officer in ANY situation that involves me driving, they will ask to see my license and run it through the system. So lets look at worst case scenario and assume someone rear ends me or I’m otherwise involved in a collision that was entirely the fault of the other driver.
As long as I don’t reveal to them that I was driving without a license, I’m golden. I take down their information, and be a nice guy and let them off the hook upon them paying me whatever the mechanical damages turn out to be. Since they caused the wreck, they will be more than happy to NOT get the police or their insurance company involved since their rates would go up.
And lets say that for some crazy reason they end up not paying me. Then in my county small claims courts are separate from traffic courts, so I can sue them without revealing my license was suspended.
4. I know the holidays are coming up, and it will be random DUI checkpoint central. So Thanksgiving through New years, I just have my live-in girlfriend do the driving when we go out. I don’t need a license to be a passenger.
Following these precautions over the next six months, is there any way I could realistically get caught?
